Mussels and Shrimp Fra Diavolo.
It’s done here in the states most often with lobster but tonight we had it with shrimp and mussels.
It’s easy and it turned out real good.
If you have to thaw the shrimp just put them in a bowl of water and in about five minutes they will be ok to peel and devein- if needed.
Put a large skillet on the stove at medium high and drizzle in just enough olive oil to cover the bottom. When it’s heated up lay the shrimp out flat and sear both sides.
I’ve never seen a bag of frozen mussels that haven’t already been cleaned and sometimes already cooked. If you have fresh mussels scrub the whiskers off and rinse them real good. If they are frozen you can just add them to the pan right out of the bag.
When you have quickly seared the outside of the shrimp add the mussels, the marinara sauce and the lemon juice – toss the lemon rinds right in. Then comes the part where you decide just how “Fra Diavolo” you want your Mussels and Shrimp Fra Diavolo to be. When cooking for two – one half of a teaspoon of the red pepper flakes will give just a little bit of heat. When I’m making it for just me and Gammy I do about a rounded teaspoon.
And,,we shared a nice bottle of Chianti. Poppop’s easy no knead bread goes along great.
Mussels and Shrimp Fra Diavolo
Ingredients
- olive oil
- 8 - 10 extra large or Jumbo Shrimp
- 12 mussels or more!
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes or more -or less - it's up to you
- 1 fresh lemon
Instructions
- Put a large skillet on the stove at medium high and drizzle in just enough olive oil to cover the bottom. When it's heated up lay the shrimp out flat and sear both sides. We're doing this before we add the mussels and the sauce so that the shrimp won't soften up too much while finishing cooking in the sauce.
- When you have quickly seared the outside of the shrimp add the mussels, the sauce and the lemon juice - toss the lemon rinds right in. Then comes the part where you decide just how "Fra Diavolo" you want your Mussels and Shrimp Fra Diavolo to be. When cooking for two - one half of a teaspoon of the red pepper flakes will give just a little bit of heat. Two tablespoons might have you gulping water in between each bite. When I'm making it for just me and Gammy I do about a rounded teaspoon.
- Simmer for about 5-7 minutes. Throw away any mussels that aren't open. Then serve up and enjoy your Mussels and Shrimp Fra Diavolo!
