Easy Grilled Tuna Steak

Easy Grilled Tuna Steak

This Easy Grilled Tuna Steak recipe is as tasty as it is easy. It is great for a busy weeknight. You can do it in a skillet or outside on the barbecue grill or on a stovetop  grill like we did it here tonight.

Growing up in New Jersey my dad was a fishing nut. I would often go with him and his buddies on their trips off shore. My dad always dreamed of catching a big tuna and bringing home, getting it stuffed and mounting it over the fireplace. It never happened. But, we always came home with some bluefish or flounder. Which my mom always cooked up real nice.

Search for Grilled Tuna Steak recipes you will find a lot of different ways to prepare the steaks before the actual grilling. Everything from just salt and pepper to marinating for hours in lots of different stuff. This is how we do it and it turns out real good. It’s quick and easy enough for a weeknight and so good there will be no leftovers.

If you have access to good fresh tuna that would be the way to go. Gammy and I now live in Texas and far enough away from the coast that I go for the frozen tuna steaks that are individually wrapped. That way we can put them in the freezer for whenever we are in a tuna mood. You could move them from the freezer to the fridge in the morning and they will be defrosted and waiting for you when you get home. They will even defrost in a bowl of water in about 8-10 minutes. If you do that remember to leave them in the individual packets while defrosting in the water.

Put  your stove top grill (or skillet) on the burner or burners at medium high and spray or swab with oil. Put the steaks in a shallow bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Turn them over so that each side is coated with the oil. Lightly sprinkle both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder and dried dill leaves. You could substitute  dried oregano if you are caught without the dill weed. If you want to you could go further at this point with lemon zest or cyanne pepper and on and on but stopping at the dill weed or oregano works real good.

Put the grill or the skillet on at medium high. Spray or wipe the grill (or skillet) with oil. After you set them on the grill don’t move them until you think it might be time to turn them over. They might want to stick before they start to get grilled. For rare or raw in the middle grill about one to one and a half minutes a side. We like ours medium and we give them two and a half minutes per side.
